Barnyard of Broken Bones And Betrayl

Skegby, Nottinghamshire – Another horrific story of abuse coming to use from across the pond and once again the conditions were described as horrific and once again failing so many animals.

This time, what started as a missing dog tip reportedly exposed something far bigger: 455 animals across 19 species living in appalling conditions at Croftfield Farm.

The rescue, known as Operation Teal, took two days and involved the RSPCA, Nottinghamshire Police, vets, and more than 100 staff from seven animal-welfare charities. Rescuers found dogs, puppies, horses, donkeys, guinea pigs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, rodents, goats, cows, birds, reptiles, tortoises, pygmy squirrels, a Congo grey parrot, and even a llama.

According to the RSPCA, animals were found in filthy barns, hutches, sheds, outbuildings, and fields. Dogs were reportedly living in faeces and urine. Some birds had no clean water. Cats had fleas and flu. Goats had overgrown hooves. Equines were suffering from thrush, rotting feet, poor body condition, and lack of basic veterinary and farrier care.

RSPCA Inspector Laura Baker said the smell of manure hit rescuers as soon as they walked through the gate. She described one lame cow as “the most broken animal” she had ever seen and recalled a lamb left suffering with multiple fractures and infection after a dog attack.

In court, District Judge Grace Leong described the neglect as “deliberate and sustained” and “harrowing.”

Lee Hayes pleaded guilty to 25 Animal Welfare Act offences and was sentenced to 12 months in prison with a lifetime ban on keeping animals.

Tammy Heath pleaded guilty to two animal-welfare offences involving two dogs and received a 13-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, a five-year dog ban, and 200 hours of unpaid work.

Many of the rescued animals were treated, and many have since been rehomed or moved into long-term care through rescue partners. But this case is a brutal reminder that one report, one tip, and one welfare check can uncover hundreds of animals who desperately need help.

Once again, see something, say something and do something!

If you see suspected animal neglect, report it. Silence protects abusers. Reports protect animals.
