A Waukesha County babysitter was sentenced to nine months in jail Monday after admitting to killing a family’s dog earlier this year.

Kielee Sonnemann pleaded guilty to stabbing Batman, an 8-pound Chihuahua, while babysitting for the Ciardo family in Sussex in January. Prosecutors said she used a pair of scissors to stab the dog five times. The Ciardos found Batman’s body the next day, hidden under blankets and stuffed animals, with a plastic bag over his head.

In court, Sonnemann tearfully apologized, citing mental health struggles as a factor. Despite her remorse, the Ciardo family expressed doubt about her sincerity and disappointment in the sentence, saying they hoped for a harsher punishment.
