Sheriff promises accountability after deputy reportedly hits dog, keeps driving
Port St. John, Florida – Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Florida (Official) Wayne Ivey has launched an internal investigation after video appears to show one of his deputies hitting a dog with a patrol vehicle and continuing without stopping.
Sheriff Ivey addressed the incident publicly, saying it disturbed both the community and himself. He promised the investigation will determine exactly what happened and that the results will be shared with the public.
The incident happened July 19th after a Good Samaritan had already stopped to help a dog running near Golfview Avenue. Moments later, the dog was reportedly hit by a Brevard County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle.
The witness immediately called 911 and remained with the injured dog. He later looked at his surveillance video, which appeared to show the patrol vehicle involved.
The Sheriff’s Office says GPS and other technology are being used as part of the investigation. The deputy has not been publicly identified, and as of our last check, the agency has not announced whether the deputy has been placed on administrative leave.
There is good news.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed its Pet Posse fund will pay all of the dog’s veterinary expenses, and veterinarians expect him to recover. The dog is currently safe at a local shelter while officials work to identify his owner.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey often reminds the public:

Someone did.
This time, it may have been one of his own.
Animal advocates will now be watching to see whether the Sheriff’s promise of transparency is matched by accountability.
